EMDR Therapy

When you experience a traumatic event, your brain’s natural coping mechanisms can become overwhelmed. The memory of the event—along with the sights, sounds, thoughts, and feelings associated with it—can become "stuck" in your nervous system. This is why a smell, a sound, or a stressful situation today can trigger the same intense panic or fear you felt during the original trauma.

Talk therapy is incredibly valuable, but sometimes talking about the trauma is not enough to resolve the physical and emotional distress it leaves behind. That is where Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy comes in.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a specialized, evidence-based psychotherapy designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. Unlike traditional therapy, which focuses primarily on altering the emotions, thoughts, and responses resulting from traumatic experiences, EMDR focuses directly on the memory itself.

The goal of EMDR is to help your brain reprocess these stuck memories so they are no longer emotionally charged. You will still remember what happened, but the memory will no longer carry the intense, visceral pain it once did.

How Does EMDR Work?

During an EMDR session, your specially trained counselor will guide you to briefly focus on a specific distressing memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation. This stimulation typically involves following the therapist's hand movements with your eyes (side to side), listening to alternating tones, or holding small buzzers that gently vibrate in alternating hands.

This bilateral stimulation mimics the psychological state we enter during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. It helps "unlock" the nervous system and allows your brain's natural healing processes to resume, effectively filing the memory away in the past where it belongs.

What Does EMDR Treat?

While EMDR is most widely recognized as a highly effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma, it is also successfully used to treat a variety of other challenges, including:

•Anxiety and panic attacks

•Depression

•Grief and loss

•Phobias

•Disturbing memories from childhood or recent events

The Client Experience: Safety and Pacing

At North Star Counseling and Trauma Specialists, your emotional safety is our highest priority. We do not rush into processing trauma.

Before beginning the active reprocessing phases of EMDR, your counselor will spend time helping you build strong emotional regulation and grounding skills. You will learn techniques to manage stress and stay present, ensuring you feel equipped and secure throughout the EMDR process. You are always in control, and we move at a pace that feels right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR

Will EMDR make me forget what happened?

No. EMDR does not erase memories. Instead, it changes how the memory is stored in your brain. You will still recall the event, but it will feel like a memory from the past rather than a threat in the present.

Is EMDR right for me?

EMDR is a highly effective treatment for many people, but it is not the only way to heal. During your initial sessions, your counselor will work closely with you to understand your history and goals, and together you will decide if EMDR is the best therapeutic approach for your unique needs.

Can EMDR be done virtually?

Yes. Our counselors are trained to provide effective, secure EMDR therapy via telehealth. We use specialized software to provide bilateral stimulation during online sessions, allowing you to experience the benefits of EMDR from the comfort of your home anywhere in Minnesota.
