Suicidal Ideation Counseling

If You Are in Immediate Danger

North Star Counseling & Trauma Specialists is an outpatient counseling practice and does not provide 24/7 emergency or crisis response. If you are in immediate danger, feel unable to keep yourself safe, or are concerned that someone else is at immediate risk, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department now.

For immediate, confidential emotional or mental-health support, call, text, or chat 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can also support people who are worried about someone they care about.  In Minnesota, you can also use the state’s directory of county and Tribal Nation mental-health crisis contacts to locate local crisis services.

You Do Not Have to Carry This Alone

When emotional pain, trauma, depression, grief, or overwhelming life stress becomes too much to carry, suicidal thoughts can arise. You may feel exhausted, trapped, disconnected, or unsure how to tell anyone what is happening. You may also be worried about being judged, misunderstood, or overreacted to if you speak honestly.

At North Star Counseling & Trauma Specialists, we provide a compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental place to talk about what you are experiencing. You do not need to have the right words, a diagnosis, or a complete plan for getting better before you reach out. Our role is to listen carefully, help you understand the pain beneath the thoughts, and work with you toward greater safety, connection, and hope.

Ongoing Outpatient Support for Suicidal Thoughts

If you are safe enough to participate in scheduled outpatient therapy, counseling can be an important part of your longer-term support. We approach these conversations with care and without shame. Rather than treating you like a problem to be solved, we work collaboratively to understand what has made life feel unbearable and what support may help you move forward.

Your counselor may help you identify patterns, stressors, past experiences, and unmet needs that are contributing to your distress. Together, you may develop a personalized safety plan, identify people and resources you can contact during difficult moments, and strengthen the supports that help you stay connected to what matters to you.

Because North Star is a trauma-informed practice, we also recognize that suicidal thoughts can be connected to unresolved trauma, depression, grief, relationship pain, identity-based stress, or overwhelming life transitions. Your care will be tailored to your individual needs, goals, and level of support. If a higher level of care, psychiatric support, or emergency services would better meet your needs, we will discuss appropriate next steps and referrals with you.

What to Expect When You Reach Out

Taking the first step can feel difficult. When you contact North Star, you can let us know that you are looking for support related to suicidal thoughts or intense emotional pain. Our team will help determine whether outpatient counseling is an appropriate fit for your current needs.

If outpatient care is appropriate, your first sessions will focus on building trust, understanding your story, and creating a plan for support. You are not required to share every painful detail immediately. We will move at a pace that respects your safety and readiness while still addressing the concerns that brought you to us.

If you need help right now, or if your safety could change before an appointment is available, use crisis support instead: call or text 988, chat through the 988 Lifeline, contact a local Minnesota crisis service, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I talk about suicidal thoughts without being judged?

Yes. You deserve to be heard with compassion and respect. Our counselors will ask thoughtful questions about your safety and support needs so they can respond responsibly, but the goal is to understand and help—not to shame you.

What if I am not sure whether I am in a crisis?

If you feel unsafe, unable to keep yourself safe, or unsure whether you can wait for an appointment, contact 988 immediately by call, text, or chat. A trained counselor can help you decide on the next safest step.

Can a family member or loved one reach out for support?

A concerned loved one can contact 988 for immediate guidance, even if they are worried about someone else.  They may also contact North Star to ask general questions about our services, although your privacy and consent guide any conversation about your care.

Does North Star provide emergency appointments or 24-hour response?

No. North Star provides scheduled outpatient counseling. For immediate crisis response or emergency care, call 911, contact 988, or use Minnesota’s local crisis-services directory.
