Relationships & Identity

Relationships and identity shape the way we move through the world. They influence how we experience safety, belonging, love, family, purpose, and self-worth. When those parts of life feel complicated, painful, or uncertain, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

At North Star Counseling & Trauma Specialists, we provide a compassionate, affirming space to explore the connections that matter to you and the parts of yourself you are coming to understand more deeply. Whether you are working through conflict in a relationship, navigating family dynamics, exploring your gender or sexuality, or simply trying to live more authentically, you deserve support that sees and respects your full story.

Care Rooted in Respect and Connection

We do not believe that there is one “right” way to have a relationship, build a family, or understand your identity. Our role is not to tell you who you should be or what your life should look like. Instead, we listen carefully, help you identify what matters most to you, and support you in building healthier patterns of communication, connection, and self-trust.

Because North Star is a trauma-informed practice, we also recognize that past emotional injury can affect how safe it feels to be close to others, set boundaries, express your needs, or be fully yourself. Our approach is collaborative, patient, and grounded in the belief that meaningful change is possible.

Couples Counseling

Even strong partnerships can become strained by stress, life transitions, intimacy issues, unresolved hurt, or communication breakdowns. When conflicts repeat and connection feels harder to find, it can leave both partners feeling frustrated, lonely, or misunderstood.

Our Couples Counseling helps partners understand the patterns beneath their conflict, communicate more clearly, and rebuild trust over time. We create a neutral, supportive environment where both individuals can feel heard while working toward a more connected and resilient relationship.

Family Counseling

Family dynamics are complex, and changes—such as blending families, parenting struggles, grief, or behavioral challenges—can disrupt the balance of the entire household. When communication breaks down, the home can feel more like a battleground than a place of support.

Our Family Counseling provides a structured space for families to untangle these dynamics together. We help family members understand each other’s perspectives, improve how they resolve conflicts, and build healthier ways of relating so the family can move forward as a stronger unit.

LGBTQIA+ Affirming Counseling

LGBTQIA+ people deserve mental-health care that does more than tolerate identity—it should honor it. You should not have to spend your therapy session educating your provider, hiding parts of yourself, or worrying that you will be judged.

Our LGBTQIA+ Affirming Counseling offers inclusive, experienced support for the unique stressors that can come with minority stress, coming out, family or relationship concerns, trauma, and the everyday work of living authentically. You can also seek help for anxiety, depression, grief, or trauma in a space where your identity is respected without question.

Gender and Sexuality Counseling

Exploring gender identity or sexuality can bring moments of clarity, joy, uncertainty, fear, and everything in between. You may be questioning, transitioning, working through family dynamics, or looking for a place to speak openly about who you are without being pressured toward a particular outcome.

Our Gender & Sexuality Counseling provides a supportive setting to explore identity, expression, authenticity, and the emotional impact of societal expectations. For adults seeking ongoing peer connection, our Gender Exploration Group offers an affirming space to learn, reflect, and connect with others on similar journeys.

A Place to Feel Seen

You are more than the conflict you are facing or the question you are trying to answer. You deserve care that treats you as a whole person—one with strengths, values, relationships, history, and the capacity to grow.

We offer counseling in person in Minnetonka and through secure virtual counseling across Minnesota. Whether you are seeking individual, couples, family, or group support, we are here to help you find a path forward that feels genuine to you.
