Family Counseling
Family dynamics are incredibly complex. Even in the most loving homes, changes, stress, and differing personalities can disrupt the balance of the entire household. When communication breaks down, the home can feel more like a battleground than a place of support and comfort.
You might be dealing with constant arguments, a teenager who is pulling away, the stress of blending a new family, or the lingering tension of unresolved hurt. When the family unit is struggling, it affects everyone's mental health.
At North Star Counseling & Trauma Specialists, we provide a structured, compassionate space for families to untangle these dynamics together. Our goal is to help you move forward as a stronger, more resilient unit.
Creating a Neutral Space for Every Voice
In the middle of a family conflict, it is common for individuals to feel unheard, misunderstood, or unfairly blamed. Our family counselors act as neutral facilitators. We ensure that every family member—from parents to teens—has a safe space to express their perspective without fear of being shouted down or dismissed.
We help families shift away from asking "Who is at fault?" to asking "What is the pattern, and how can we change it together?" By improving how you listen and respond to one another, we help you build healthier ways of relating.
Navigating Complex Family Challenges
We work with families of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to navigate a wide variety of challenges, including:
- Parent-Teen Conflict: Bridging the communication gap, establishing healthy boundaries, and supporting teens through the pressures of adolescence.
- Life Transitions: Managing the stress of a move, a divorce, a new baby, or an empty nest.
- Blended Families: Navigating the unique challenges of step-parenting, establishing new household rules, and building trust in a newly formed family.
- Grief and Loss: Helping the family unit process and mourn the loss of a loved one together.
- The Impact of Trauma or Mental Illness: Understanding how one family member's struggle with anxiety, depression, or trauma affects the entire family system, and learning how to provide healthy support.
We are proud to provide inclusive,
LGBTQIA+ affirming care for all couples seeking support.
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Family Care
Families do not exist in a vacuum. Often, the way we parent or react to our family members is deeply influenced by how we were raised or by past traumas we have experienced. As a trauma-informed practice, we approach family conflict with deep empathy for these underlying factors.
If past emotional injury is driving current family dysfunction, we help family members develop empathy for one another's triggers and reactions. When necessary, we can coordinate care with individual therapists to ensure everyone is getting the comprehensive support they need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs to attend family counseling?
This depends entirely on your family's specific situation and goals. Sometimes, it is most effective for the entire household to attend. Other times, the counselor may recommend sessions with just the parents, or just the parents and one specific child. We will discuss the best structure for your family during your initial consultation.
Do you work with young children?
While we provide family counseling that includes children, our individual therapy services are generally focused on teens (ages 13+) and adults. If your family needs specialized play therapy or individual support for a very young child, we can provide trusted referrals while continuing to support the parents or the broader family unit.
Can family therapy help if my parents are adults?
Yes. Family counseling is not just for parents and young children. We frequently work with adult children and their parents to heal old wounds, establish healthy adult boundaries, and improve their current relationship.
