Couples Counseling
When you first committed to your relationship, you likely envisioned a partnership built on mutual support, understanding, and shared goals. But over time, the realities of life—stress, career changes, parenting, financial pressure, or unresolved hurt—can slowly erode that foundation.
You might find yourselves stuck in the same exhausting arguments, feeling more like roommates than partners, or struggling to communicate without it turning into a fight. When connection feels harder to find, it can leave both of you feeling lonely, frustrated, and misunderstood.
At North Star Counseling & Trauma Specialists, we want you to know that struggling in your relationship does not mean you have failed. It simply means your partnership needs new tools to navigate the challenges you are facing.
Breaking the Cycle of Conflict
Our goal in couples counseling is not to take sides or decide who is "right." Instead, we view the relationship itself as the client. We provide a neutral, supportive environment where both partners can safely explore their dynamics and understand the patterns beneath the conflict.
Often, what we argue about on the surface—money, chores, time spent together—is actually rooted in deeper, unmet needs for safety, respect, or feeling valued. We help you identify these underlying needs and teach you how to express them in ways your partner can truly hear.
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Relationships
Because we are a trauma-informed practice, we understand that individual unhealed trauma often plays a significant role in relationship struggles. Past experiences can affect how safe it feels to be vulnerable, how you react to perceived criticism, or how you set boundaries.
If historical trauma is impacting your ability to connect or trust, our counselors can gently address those factors within the context of your relationship, helping both partners develop empathy for how past wounds are showing up in the present. If appropriate, we may also recommend concurrent individual trauma therapy to support your relationship work.
What We Help Couples Navigate
We work with partners at all stages of their relationship, including dating, engaged, and married couples, to address a wide range of challenges:
- Communication Breakdowns: Learning to listen without defensiveness and speak without criticism.
- Rebuilding Trust: Navigating the painful aftermath of infidelity, betrayal, or broken promises.
- Life Transitions: Managing the stress of becoming parents, career changes, or an empty nest.
- Intimacy and Disconnection: Finding your way back to each other when you feel more like roommates than romantic partners.
- Pre-Marital Counseling: Building a strong foundation of communication and shared expectations before making a long-term commitment.
We are proud to provide inclusive,
LGBTQIA+ affirming care for all couples seeking support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we both have to attend every session?
Generally, yes. Because the focus of couples counseling is the dynamic between you, it is most effective when both partners are present and actively participating. However, your counselor may occasionally recommend an individual session for each partner to gather history and better understand your individual perspectives.
What if my partner refuses to come to counseling?
It is difficult when one partner is ready for therapy and the other is not. If your partner is unwilling to attend, you can still seek
individual counseling to work on your own communication skills, set healthy boundaries, and understand your emotional responses within the relationship.
How long does couples counseling take?
Every relationship is different. Some couples come to therapy to navigate a specific, short-term transition and find relief in a few months. Others who are working through deep-seated conflict or betrayal may benefit from longer-term support. We will work with you to establish clear goals and regularly check in on your progress.
